The use of white in Interior Design

Posted by on Tuesday, April 24, 2012,
White, some people love it, some people hate it, but whatever you think white with the right use of other colours can make a stunning contribution to exciting but timeless interior design.

The black table, plants, lamp all contribute to the white to create a vibrant but relaxing living room

I like this bed sit with it's stack of books, floor rug, small sofa and the well arranged 'jumble' of pictures.  Shame about the floor, a lighter shade might have worked, or even painted !

Be careful when mixing styles !

I love the palette for this dining room, restful but quietly elegant, perfect for mealtimes with family and friends, but also intimate dinners for two,...... BUT:

The brown chairs, for me, just don't look right.

Perhaps if they had been painted to pick up or complement the colours of the fabrics or walls it might have worked, but the brown chairs look as if they belong in a 'shabby chic' setting, not in such an elegant style as the rest of the room.

Designers from the past

Posted by on Thursday, November 19, 2009,
Billy Baldwin (1903 – 1984) defined Interior Design as
"making people feel wonderful in their homes"

.
His pet aversions were jumble and clutter, satin and dam-ask,
fake fireplaces, false books and ostentation of any kind.
.

He also went on to say:

"I've always believed that architecture is more important than decoration.
Scale and proportion give everlasting satisfaction that cannot be achieved
by only icing the cake."

"Decorators should never insist on throwing out everything the client has.

My Approach

Money spent on expensive wallpaper, Farrow and Ball paints etc will never replace the proper utilisation of space achieved by paying attention to the Architectural layout as well as the Interior Design.

Quality of light, functionality, architectural details, all are more important in contributing to the  character, ambiance and sense of well being in that space.  Homes and other spaces that were simply decorated and not designed  eventually become dated and often the lack of design contributes to a sense of unease about the space.

Good Design which functions on the comfort of the occupant in every sense can be simply redecorated when necessary and always feel right
